Mary is a Utah-based Creative passionate about our world.
As a photographer and writer, Mary focuses on where culture, environment, and adventure meet. In the past, she has written and shot for Patagonia Journal, Backcountry Magazine, Powder, Freehub, Sidetracked, Mountain Flyer, Outdoor Journal, and more.
While chronic illness is currently causing her to reimagine her approach to life, work, and her very identity, she is experimenting with new ways to combine her interests in conservation, botany, cultural history, and personal connection to share stories of the world's people and places, documenting the diversity of human experience.
Her silversmithing practice is based on moments of encounter and the deep presence we feel in nature.
+ From a very young age, growing up in the mountains and deserts of Utah, Mary became enamored with splashing up creeks barefoot, examining leaves, flowers, insects, birds, rocks, everything around her. Every season brought something new to see, feel, explore. She has practiced art in many mediums throughout her life, but the act of soldering, shaping, and displaying beautiful stones wrapped in silver is something new and particularly grounding.
+ Her love of the high desert landscape informs each design and the jewelry she creates has grown out of all of these influences. Silversmithing has helped her find a new way to explore the world. It allows her to continue her relationship with the natural world and honor the beauty she find there. Each piece is made slowly, little by little as her energy allows.
+ Her Southern Utah studio is mostly outdoors, so each piece is crafted under the desert sky. The aim of her jewelry is to give you a literal piece of the earth to wear around your neck. It is alive with a sense of the place it embodies.
Have a story to tell? I’d love to hear from you 🙏
