Ponderosa Pine Seed Pendant
The tiny, precious seed of a Ponderosa Pine tree, cast into sterling silver. A symbol of growth and family ties. Pendant hangs on a 16 inch oxidized sterling silver chain.
I found this seed in a recently-burned area of the Aquarius Plateau. I’d never seen an actual ponderosa seed before, but the fire had done it’s job of opening up the scattered cones and a few of the seeds had been blackened by the fire, one of which I brought home to create this casting.
Sand casting is an ancient technique where I create a mold using slightly damp sand and then pour molten silver into the mold. I take scraps of recycled sterling silver and melt them down to create each pendant. It is delightful alchemy. Each mold can only be used once and so each casting is unique.
