Tiny Bone Pendant
Handmade sterling silver pendant on a 20” oxidized sterling silver chain.
In many cultures, bones are sacred and represent the transitory nature of life and potential for regeneration as well as a connection to ancestors. They may also be used as talismans to bring good luck or ward off evil spirits.
I had been wanting to try casting a bone for several months, and after a winter of investigating every owl pellet I found out on the land, this perfectly sized bone appeared in a fur-filled pellet under a piñon pine. I used it to create a mold in sand so this silver bone is an exact replica.
Sand casting is an ancient technique where I create a mold using slightly damp sand and then pour molten silver into the mold. I take scraps of recycled sterling silver and melt them down to create each pendant. It is delightful alchemy.
